Rumor Alert! Groomer Has It

It's like the Shear Genius of the dog world! Animal Planet's new Groomer Has It will sniff out 12 of America's most creative and hard-working groomers — both amateur and professional — to compete for the crown of Groomer of the Year. With three regular judges and one guest judge, each week's episode will pit the groomers against each other — and some possibly unwilling pooches — to see who can turn the scruffiest into the chichi-est. Using knowledge, skill, and just plain luck, the Los Angeles-based series will put talents to the test and is slated to premiere in April. Not only can't I wait to see the hair flying from the combo of (likely) untrained dogs and cameras, my fingers are crossed that one of the contestants (or judges) will be from SuperGroom. Stay tuned for more info as I receive it!

nikkih your so right!!! cruelety my but. how about the dogs getting skinned alive over in china??? worry about that people!!! these dogs are treated better than your kids!!!

kristabelle ... you can help your dog transition into being okay with grooming by giving him/her positive experiences. i've found that if we can do the grooming it's much easier on the dog and less stressful. i made the mistake of taking one of my dogs to the neighborhood groomer and he had such a traumatic experience there that i'd never take another dog anywhere and drop him/her off. my two dogs since then are show dogs and they have learned since puppyhood that baths, nail clippings, etc. are standard and not optional. i've found that peanut butter goes a long way for helping the dog adjust to grooming and they even start to look forward to it. and, please don't feel bad for the poodle who's being sprayed with show product. if you ever go to a dog show and watch them in the ring, you will see they love to show and they don't mind being fluffed and puffed. while it would be great if they could just be shown in their natural state, it's part of the dog show culture and it's not going to change.

sistah fuzzles.....have you ever groomed a dog to be sayin anything about holding a muzzle? seriuosly ...cuz if you dont know this field of work...which is obvious......you would know that not only must we hold muzzles but we must use muzzles unless you want to lose fingers due to puss filled bite wounds that get infected.....it also helps balance your animal while you ad your style.....chiiiiiilllll with that bad customer dont hold a dog the wrong way tude....i cant even deal with a customer that has your views. ....master cerified groomer 17 years....passinate for animals....holds muzzles.....

Hi, Ran across your site while looking for the Groomer Has It. My dog Sol was one of the chosen ones. He is a beagle terrier mix and looks like a small wheaten terrier. We where at the dog park in Long Beach, Ca and Animal Planet was there. They were great with the dogs and the dogs did have to go to the studio in LA and stay over night. We were allowed to be there all the time. They were great with the dogs and did a beautiful job. I got the call today and the program airs April 12 at 9:00pm.

I love all those shows, Shear Genius, Project Runway, etc., so I bet this one will be interesting too. Although, for some reason I am already starting to feel a little badly for the animals, I hope the contestants are humane in their search for stardom.

It doesn't look to me like the assistant is holding the dog steady, it looks like she is just petting the dog in an absent-minded way while talking to the other lady standing there or looking at something else. If that dog wanted to move it's head away from the spray it could just lift it's head up and out of her palm. At the very least, it would be squinting if there was any bit of spray near it's eyes. I grew up in the dog showing/breeding world, and trust me, the well-being of the animal is the highest concern. I don't care what peta tells you, those animals are BABIED.

mizz66, Thanks for an explanation. I have had persian cats for years, and I don't even let them in the bathroom when I spray my own hair for the day. I would be too worried about the stuff getting in their eyes and on their coats, which they would subsequently ingest while grooming! :) But wouldn't it be less harmful to use a coat conditioner after a bath? I grew up as a kid with a wunnerful mini schnauzer, and don't recall much other than bathing, coat conditioning, and of course, the lovely shave cut upkeep. Ya learn something every day! :)

Fuzzles, the "Hairspray" you speak of is more than likely coat shine , which stops the dogs coat drying out too much in harsh weather it also makes the dog smell nice aswell.

Nikkih, If you had read my post with a bit more care, you would have realized that I was speaking to the use of aerisol hairspray on the dog, not the dog being bathed or given a haircut. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the assistant is pointing HER face away from the dog's face in order to avoid the fumes, while holding the dog's face steady. But I digress. It's getting late, and I have an early appointment for my very first haircut EVER this weekend! Oh, and my cat's groomer sends her best! ;)

Unfortunately, not all dogs eventually accept grooming. My one dog hates it with a passion that is only matched by her strength when bucking like a wild bronco in the tub or on the grooming table. She is 5 and only weighs 25 lbs! When I take her to Petsmart to have her nails trimmed, two people have to do the job. One has to hold her and try not to get a broken nose in the process, and the other has to attempt the nail trim. My husband will not participate in it at home anymore, so I must take her out to have it done. My other dog is much more placid about the whole thing, so at least we have one less than wild child! I wonder if they will show any Wheatens on the show??? Should be interesting.

I saw the postings for casting this show, and as a dog groomer myself, I was tempted to go for the prize... HOWEVER grooming a dog is not like designing a dress or building a house. Dogs have very different personalities and tolerance levels. The number one quality of a good groomer is patience. I just don't see how you can do a reality TV show/competition and expect people to keep the dog's safety and comfort as a first priority. And to the earlier poster: grooming is only as cruel as the groomer. Sure the first time isn't easy, and the dog will cry... but have you ever taken a toddler in for a haircut? They react pretty much the same way, because they don't understand what is going on. A good groomer will work with the dog to keep it calm, and by about the third haircut any (sane) dog is pretty accepting.

I have the best dog groomer in the UK. My Yorkie goes to her house for an hour or so and I fetch her back all clean and clipped. My dog knows her way around her house playes with her kids and dogs and is shattered when she comes home. It saves me having to bath her and is well worth the money every month.

we have a poodle too and she's wonderful! we keep her hair all one length and most people don't know what kind of dog she is--most guess a labradoodle, which goes to show mixing the breeds isn't really necessary. the great thing about poodles is that they're a great fit for many different types of owners--from the higher maintenance, show dogs to simply adorable family dogs.

We have a standard poodle (like in the photo LOL) and he's always preferred the more "manly" poodle cut, aka "pup cut" - Poodles have hair, not fur, that grows and needs to be cut on a regular basis. Harry's an old pro when he goes to the groomer (the times I'm too lazy to clip him myself) Fuzzles, the hair spray is going on top of his hair, and the groomer is no where near his face - there are some things that are uncomfortable for dogs when they are groomed (removing hair from ears - the equivilant of getting a bikini wax) but very necessary for the health of the dog, especially standard poodles who are prone to ear infections. That's an extreme hairdo, granted but - that fancy cut you see on poodles at the dog shows was actually done out of necessity and well being for the dog (*warning - poodle history ahead*) Contrary to popular belief, the poodle is not French, it's German, and was originally a hunting companion. Poodle came from the german word "pudel", which means wet, puddle...not in present day, but if you look at some of the phrases like "pudelnass" (drowned rat) you get the picture :-) Any rate, poodles have hair, not fur, so they need regular trimming. Their dense, curly coat keeps the warmth in. To keep their hunting dogs healthy, they would trim their coats short on the back, face, belly, legs, so the hair would not weigh the dogs down when they went into the water. They left the hair on the chest, head, and ankle joints to provide warmth for the dogs, and keep their joints supple. /*poodle history off* :-D

Fuzzles, get a life. You've never had a hair cut? Animal cruelty is keeping dogs in cages 24/7 or fighting them to the death to make a profit. Not giving them a bath and cutting their hair. :oy:

I'd like to hold that "groomer" by the muzzle, like her "assistant" is doing to that dog, and spray hair product within inches of HER eyes, nose and face. Beyond cruel! The producers of this show should be neutered and/or spayed!

I never had a dog that you have to groom. We've always just had farm dogs.
