To the Rescue: Stop Poo Eating With This!

Samson's not the only pooch who thinks poo is a delicacy, North had this very problem when he was a pup. I remember my hushed voice admission of his coprophagia on the first vet visit, thinking I just had an unfortunately dirty dog. The doc just laughed it off and gave me sample packets of this product S.E.P. Stop Eating Poop ($10) is a holistic remedy of Glutamic Acid powder to sprinkle on your pup's (real) food. I'm told it's tasteless to the pooches when it's on their dinner but, when mixed with stomach acids, it gives their waste a distinctly bitter taste. Yeah, I'll take her word for it.

pineapple also works - about a tablespoon of crushed pineapple. they like the taste, hate the poo. my fiancees parents did this with their dog and it really works -- she was a puppy mill dog and didnt get fed a lot so kind of lived off her own poo for the first two years of her life, and it was a habit that they had to break - and she now just eats her yummy food and no poo!

meat tenderizer does the same thing! My puppy used to have this problem & my vet told me to put meat tenderizer on her food for the same reasons as this product & it worked! It's flavorless but apparently tastes horrid when it comes out.

I just might have to try this. We've had this problem on & off with Bella since we got her (5 months ago). She goes through spurts, and we feed her high-end dog food, so I don't think it's her diet, I think she just likes it! ;)

i was watching 'its me or the dog' on animal planet. and they had this ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE chocolate lab puppy named Teeo who did this. Victoria suggested feeding the dog some pineapple after his meal so his poo smelled bad (to him)..did the trick..

mondaymoos, You might want to look into an enclosed litter box. If you flip through the back advertising of a feline magazine, like Cat Fancy, there are usually ads for this kind of pan. The style that I am thinking actually looks like a fairly nice end table. The cat needs to jump up through a hole to get to the pan, which is hidden from view. If you don't want to spend the money (if I remember right, they are a little spendy!), just put the pan in an area that the dog can't get to. Hope this helps! :)

Damn. I just forwarded this to my roommates before I realized that you can't feed it to cats. The puppy often attacks the cat box. -_- Any remedies for that, petsugar?

Lack of nutrients is not the reason that all dogs eat poo. However it is the situation for some.

My dogs both grew out of the poo eating thing on their own. I heard (many times over, especially from my MIL) the myths about them eating poo because they aren't getting certain nutrients, but from my research, that is just not true. In addition to looking up that information, my dogs have always been on a very well balanced diet of high-quality dog food (none of that Beneful crud, I'm talking to you Christina Ricci!), and each of them have eaten poo as puppies. It's not harmful, just gross to us humans.

I have asked my vet about this too and they recommended that I just keep a closer eye...I will give this product a shot. Jager loves to eat both his and Bailey's doodie!

If your dog is eating poo you may also want to look at their diet. They sometimes eat poo if they do not have enough nutrients. They also will eat poo if the area where they normally go is not cleaned often. I have also heard that you can spray poo with vinegar or hotsauce

Does it work on cats too? My dog doesn't eat her own but unfortunately developed a love of the litter box. We had to build a puppy proof enclosure for the kitty's dignity.
