On how Gretchen became Boo's photographer:
"While I was taking a photo class, I was also making extra cash by walking a neighbor's French bulldogs at lunchtime. And one day a friend and I set up a backdrop and snapped a few portraits. In profile, those particular dogs have a look of gravity, and I was drawn to the odd anthropomorphism of the photographs. I also just love animals and am not daunted by the trickiness of getting a still image from a moving animal — I like the challenge.
"A month after that first experiment, a friend of mine held an art exhibit of commissioned photographs of his dog, which was made into a book. It was followed by a fun book about training people told from the perspective of a Labrador, which was published by Chronicle Books. And from there I started working with Boo."
