Horseplay: Meet the Horses of the 138th Kentucky Derby!

May 3 2012 - 4:00am

Whether or not you believe that horse racing is a dangerous sport [1], one thing most animal lovers can agree on is the beauty of these animal kingdom athletes! The Kentucky Derby is just days away, so we thought we'd take a moment to meet some of these lovely hoofers and wish them the best in Saturday's big race!

Alpha

Winner of the Grade III Withers, this fancy pedigreed colt hopes to be top dog at Saturday's Kentucky Derby.

Bodemeister

This bay colt already has a win in the Grade I Arkansas Derby under his belt, and his trainer Bob Baffert has won the Kentucky Derby three times. Could Bodemeister come out on top?

Creative Cause

Steely grey Creative Cause gets a workout on Monday decked out in blue and yellow. In his latest race, he finished second in the Santa Anita Derby in Southern California.

Daddy Long Legs

This colt cruised to a victory in Dubai's UAE Derby in March with help from his internationally based team of owners and Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien.

Daddy Nose Best

Half brother to Daddy Long Legs, Daddy Nose Best won his last two starts at the Sunland Derby and El Camino Real Derby.

Done Talking

This grandson of 1990 Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled quietly pronounced himself a racing champ by winning the Illinois Derby in April.

Dullahan

The chestnut colt secured his entry into the Kentucky Derby with a win in April's Toyota Blue Grass Stakes. He's the half-brother of Mine That Bird who won the Derby in 2009.

El Padrino

El Padrino's pedigree reads like the Who's Who of Thoroughbred racing: he descends from two Triple Crown winners (Secretariat and Seattle Slew) and Horse of the Year A.P. Indy.

Gemologist

This bay colt is no diamond in the rough: he's won every race he's started (including the celebrated Wood Memorial) and counts racing royalty Man O' War as an ancestor.

Hansen

This lovely gray declared himself a winner by taking the Breeders' Cup Juvenile race in November when he was just 2 years old.

I'll Have Another

This chestnut colt has raced only two times in 2012, but he won both races including the prestigious Santa Anita Derby.

Liaison

In his latest race, Liaison unseated his jockey causing him to finish last. Let's hope new jockey Martin Garcia can hold onto this dynamic colt in Saturday's race!

My Adonis

He may be a long shot in Saturday's race, but My Adonis and his incredibly good-looking stride will show up to compete.

Optimizer

Optimizer's trainer D. Wayne Lukas is a basketball coach-turned Thoroughbred race horse trainer who has won four Kentucky Derbies to date.

Prospective

This winner of the Tampa Bay Derby sets his sights on a bigger prize!

Rousing Sermon

Chestnut colt Rousing Sermon munches on a post-workout snack. While he doesn't have a regal pedigree like some of his contenders, he placed a satisfactory third place in the Louisiana Derby on April 1.

Sabercat

This colt's dad (Bluegrass Cat) and granddad (Forty Niner) nearly missed winning the Kentucky Derby as three-year-olds. Can Sabercat win the prize that eluded them?

Take Charge Indy

This winner of March's Florida Derby will be ridden by jockey Calvin Borel who took charge of three Kentucky Derby titles between 2007 and 2010.

Trinniberg

An all-in-the-family type horse, Trinniberg is trained and owned by a father-son duo. This bay colt with roots in Trinidad is known for his speedy style and won his last two races.

Union Rags

After being nosed out by Hansen in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, Union Rags came back to win the Fountain of Youth in February.

Went the Day Well

Winner of the Grade III Vinery Racing Spiral, Went the Day Well hopes to have a very good day in Saturday's race!
