This question came up with a friend of mine recently: She has two cats living in a small apartment here in San Francisco, and likes to entertain guests. I asked if she would rather have a litter box cabinet, like the Refined Litter Box, that could hide away kitties' litter, but still pull double duty as a counter top, or if she would rather have an attractive and modern litter box since it would be sitting out anyway like the Litter/Bed Combo. Why hide it if you know it's there!?

It took longer than I thought it would for her to weigh out the pros and cons, and her answer kind of surprised me, given that she has so many people visiting her home. So which would you rather have – a hideaway litter box, or an attractive, visible one instead?

the hidden one!
1Even if you know it's there, no one wants to stare at poop! Hide it away!
2I don't think I could convince my cat to use a hidden litter box because he's been used to having an open litter box forever. If he would I'd love to have one, but if not, I guess that's fine too. The cat's litter box is in the laundry room where no one but me sees it anyways, so it's not really an issue.
3The hidden one for sure.
4The hidden one - my cat digs like he has a shovel. I had an uncovered box, and half the litter wound up surrounding the outside of the box.
5The hidden one is a great idea, I've never seen this before! I bet it wouldn't be too hard to make one yourself out of a cheap thrift store cabinet! You could repaint/restain it to match your own decor.
6Since I keep the litter box in the basement, I don't really care if it's out in the open. No one really goes into the basement when they come over anyways.
7I would love to have the hidden litter box, but I know my two cats wouldn't use it. Like brittanyk said, mine are used to an open one.
8I may prefer it if the litter box were hidden, but I can tell you that my two cats definitely would not. As I would prefer them to keep using the box and not the carpet, the litter box is in the open, though out of the way.
9I had a covered litter box but it smelled terrible. And my 16-year-old cat rebelled and started pooping on the floor after a few weeks of having to use it. I bought a regular one and she went right back to it.
