Myth: Shelter Dogs Are Medical "Gambles."

Reality: They may not come with health guarantees like breeder pups but that does not mean these pooches are all plagued with tons of issues. Most shelters take care of all the heartworm testing and flea and tick prevention already (and provide medical checkups first), making these pooches no riskier than dogs picked out at a pet shop.

Actually, purebreds have higher incidences of disease and degenerative health issues.

One thing I'd like to say about shelters is that sometimes they go overboard on screening for good homes. I KNOW it's important, but at age 20, a shelter deemed me 'too young' to adopt a dog. I'm happy to say that I ended up adopting a farm puppy and she was one of the most spoiled dogs I know. She lived for 7 very very happy years before dying to cancer. I know shelters have to be careful, but they should revise the adoption process a little bit. Maybe instead of deciding based on the adoption application, they should spend more time on an adoption interview...REALLY trying to decide how dedicated a person is going to be. A bunch of info written on an application does not decide whether you're going to be a good doggy parent or not.

This broke my heart. So many people spend hundreds of dollars on dogs when there are THOUSANDS that need good homes living in shelters. Our lab was a rescue and she's the sweetest little lady I've ever met!!
