I had irish setters as a child too - the ones who got the most training were the ones less 'hyper' and Dad used for hunting birds. Seems to be the bloodline, I personally think over or irresponsible breeding gave them a bad rap and labeled as hyper. Not one of ours EVER killed a bird, but many baby birds were brought to us alive and unharmed which was freaky as a kid. They're bred to have energy and be athletic with soft mouths. They're fun loving, joyful and naturally happy intelligent dogs. I have a rescue setter mix now whose just a loving clown. Best breed I've ever had as far as temperment and intelligence by far. That includes many rescue mix mutts and purebreds alike.

I've had 3 irish setters growing up and not one of them was calm. They were all hyper, loved run, eat the birds, perpetual "teenagers". You are lucky to have had a calm one!
