Creature Features: Rhinos

Here I am, always looking for an excuse to brush up on wild animal knowledge! In honor of today's holiday, Save the Rhino Day, (and with the recent birth of Manjula), I wanted to see if any of you are game to become rhinoceros experts. Test your knowledge and, hey, maybe you'll learn something!

Dehorning rhinos is still VERY controversial. I read a scientific paper about the government trying this in Tanzania. Tranquilizing them and removing their horns so that poachers won't kill them does leave the animal alive, but it puts them at great risk because they can no longer be as effective at protecting themselves and their babies. After they started doing this in Tanzania, they found that there was a HUGE drop in the survival rate of calves because their mothers could not protect them very well without their horns. The statistics were very sad. Unfortunately, poachers have pushed governments to the point of desperation where they have resorted to mutilating their wildlife in an effort to see if it can possibly protect them. There is no simple fix here.

didnt know their horns were made outta keratin.. and good for them de-horning the rhinos for their safety.
