Advice For Getting Rid of Kitty Odor?

Readers, wheatleyvi needs our help! Her cats have become territorial and are spraying inside:

I have indoor cats that I let out when possible. However, I have strays outside that I take care of, and my cats get jealous. One in particular has started "squirting" all over my house. Any suggestions on the best product to eliminate the odor of cat urine? I've tried a lot of things but nothing is really working. Love my cats to death but I can't live in a smelly house. Thanks.

white vinegar mixed with water is good to stop them going back and spraying in the same spot. However the downside is that it smells a little.

Because cat urine contains and produces ammonia, it is very recommendable not to use cleaners that contain ammonia. The best option is enzyme based cleaning products. These are the products that work better to eliminate permanently cat urine odor and stains. You must also know that a liquid based cleaning solution, including steam cleaning, does not work for stains from carpets, upholstery, mattresses, sofas, and other fabrics. The reason why a liquid based cleaning solution does not work is that you will never be able to wash all the wet liquid out. The stain and the odors are deep down in the fibers, pores, and fabrics. Liquid enzyme cleaners only mask the odors for a limited time. However, they come back. The only way to get rid of stains and smell is to use a dry powder cleaning product. My mom's cat did this when they took in a new cat. Their cat did it on their couch, I know she has put dryer sheets under the pillows - but that's after cleaning the couch, and I'm afraid I don't know what she used to do the initial cleaning.

Yikes! I can't speak from experience, but I don't let my cats outdoors. I think there is no easy answer to your question. You might experience a pain in the ass response from your cats, but don't let them outside anymore. Then no jealousy squirting, and they will return to being indoor cats. Good luck!
