Hayden Panettiere got fired up about whales in a rally at Washington, DC's Dupont Circle over the weekend. Coming a few months after the Heroes actress failed a dolphin rescue mission, Hayden has joined forces with Save the Whales Again! to continue to protest the slaughtering of whales in Japan and elsewhere. This campaign is part of the Animal Welfare Institute (founder of the original Save the Whales movement) and the Whaleman Foundation, an oceanic research, conservation, and production organization dedicated to preserving and protecting dolphins, whales, and their ocean habitat.
In addition to handing out fliers and speaking at length about the subject, she is calling for a boycott of goods from Japan, Iceland, and Norway and is scheduled to visit the embassies of those countries plus attend a news conference with the US House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources this week. When asked about her participation in these efforts, Hayden said:
I get that rush and feeling of really making a difference rather than just lending my face to something. I'd rather people pay attention to me doing this than shopping at Fred Segal. We're saving magnificent animals. I don't think anyone objects to that. I don't trust people who don't love animals.
Agreed. At just 18-years-old, her maturity on these issues is impressive and I hope she continues to speak up for what she believes in and that her fame can inspire others to get on board with the preservation movement as well. Good work, Hayden, on your real-life heroism!

I admire her but she's getting seriously overexposed ..
1While obviously I think it's wonderful that she cares so much about animals, I doubt she'll get far. Other countries like Japan and Norway won't listen to America on issues like whaling and dolphin hunting because America's treatment to animals is no less gory or violent or painful. These countries argue "you have your McDonalds and we'll have our whale meat." It's a valid point. We should clean up OUR act and then maybe they'd be more receptive.
2The dolphin hunting thing is tragic though. Dolphins will be trapped in nets as groups, and even if some of them have the chance to escape, they'll usually opt to stay behind with their friends as they're getting clubbed, speared, etc.
I agree with foxie. And it doesn't make much sense to me to boycott those countries, when I'm sure the whole country doesn't even agree with what's going on.
3I agree with the posts here. America isn't perfect. But I do like that Hayden is trying to educate people.
4What a sweet girl! I'm glad she's not just sitting on her tail and whining about changing this or that, but is actually DOING something!!
5I actually agree with you foxie! But I do think that Hayden is being overexposed. It's getting a bit annoying seeing her face everyday on this site. She's not a real hero, like on the show. please give it a rest.
6have you seen the vid where she was crying about the whole dolphin issue? pretty sad, but i am seriously suspicious of her real motives here. it's ironic what she said about Fred Segal since she spent MONTHS drawing up "the HAYDEN bag" with Dooney and Bourke. her anti-commercialisation quip is full of BS. And if she really cared, there are ways to make a difference without emblazoning her face all over the news.
7I like her devotion to the animals AND I like the Hayden bag! You can do good even if you have nice things!
8I think it´s wonderful that she is doing this and i support her message.
9I think it is good that she is trying to put herself out there with a positive movement, but I'm jaded and think it is not really doing taht much.
10I should call my relatives in norway and tell them to throw some Lox and krumkake on her.
save the whales is so 1987
11WHALES are so 1987. They're being completely wiped out. Well, at least we have picturebooks for our kids to see, right caterpillar?
12I watched the video of hayden and her mom trying to physically save these whales while poachers tried to harm all of the ppl involved, they had to give up and watch those animals in thier final hrs. mother and babys... there are pictures of her on her knees is tears about not being able to do anything to help them. I dont see many other young clebs out there trying to make that big of a distance with thier own two hands, in the water getting dirty where even thier health was at risk. I say wayt o go hayden. keep it up. So what if its whales? to see a cleb be so emotinally affected by that situation made her seem so real and no so "take some pictures please while I act like your not there" and you could see it on her face.
GO HAYDEN!
13I think killing and eating animals like whales, deer, reindeer, moose etc is much better than eating cows, pigs and chicken. They can live naturally and healthy until they're suddenly killed, while farm animals have stressful, unnatural lives shut inside a barn.
And yes I am Norwegian, but I have never eaten or even seen a whale, so boycotting us all would be unfair.
I also think Hayden is more interested in publicity than actually saving animals. She can't even be bothered to check out the facts. She claims whales are endangered, which is a straight out lie.
14Well at least her shenanigans include doing SOME good instead of getting DUI's and what-not. I can't say anything bad about her motives or what she's doing, because I'm plopped on my azz everyday.
poor girl...saving dolphins and whales is never gonna happen, but I can commend her for trying to make people aware.
15ya gotta stand for something, i'm glad that she can focus her energies on something meaningful
