For dog owners, taking a walk is a must-do . . . and for other pet owners, it can be a do, too! Equipped with special gear, you can take a stroll around the block with your pig, cat, ferret, rabbit, iguana, or even bird. Animals can benefit from out of cage time, and even if it's just a stroll around your home, a harness and leash ensure they don't scamper (or flutter) off somewhere unreachable.
- Get your pet used to wearing a harness indoors for short periods of time. Start by just putting it on during playtime in a secure area (for small pets). Harnesses work best on these pets because it is harder for them to wriggle out.
- After she seems somewhat comfortable with the harness, tie a rope or scarf to the harness so she gets used to the feel of something attached to it. Let her drag it around to feel the pull.
- Finally, you can attach the leash and take a walk. Try it out inside first and, when you feel like she's ready, take it outside during a quiet time of day. Have a pocketful of treats (or pieces of her food) to lure her to walk with you. Let her investigate the grass and trees but take her inside if she becomes spooked.

6i'm glad i'm not the only one who has walked my cat on leash. after letting him enjoy the life of an indoor/outdoor cat (and a zillion dollars in vet bills) he will be returning to the leash and only going outside supervised. while i wish i could let him roam freely, he gets into too many fights.

8I wish the people in my neighborhood would see this. They just let their cats run loose. I don't see let my dogs run loose and into everyone's yards....what makes them think it is acceptable to let cats roam the street? Question of the ages

I've tried this and well...I was nearly murdered in my sleep by two pissed off cats. They hate the lease unless I'm using it as a chase toy. They hate outside. So leashes are evil to Chloe and Ursula.
10My old cat Libby, she loved the leash. I treated her like a dog therefore she acted like a dog. She saw the leash and she was gung ho to go for a walk on it. People thought it was hilarious until she would attack them - because well she was a cat. And cat's don't like fools.
HA! I tried one of these on my cat 10 years ago. He refused to walk and all he did was a belly crawl, like a Marine!
11I have one for my bunny, but whenever he wears it he tries to chew it off. No walks for him!
12I have a feeling my cat would not be too jazzed to walk outside in one of these... there are a lot of D-O-Gs in my neighborhood, and she's scared of them, even if she is bigger than they are. Poor kitty.
