Remember taking tally of which pooches we thought would reign supreme when the final numbers came in from the American Kennel Club? Well, that time is now as here's the AKC ordered list of the top 10 most popular dog breeds in the country based on the number of those dogs registered in 2006. There's was some shaking up and I can't wait to learn about 2007! According to our votes on PetSugar, the list would be:
- Labrador Retriever
- Golden Retriever
- Yorkshire Terrier
- Dachshund
- Shih Tzu
- German Shepherd
- Beagle
- Boxer
- Miniature Schnauzer
- Poodle

Although the biggest mover was the Yorkie, Labs held their top spot (as they have since 1991) and all the other breeds from last year still stuck it out in the top ten. As a special note to me (and North!), the AKC reports that "not since the Boston Terrier hit the top nearly 70 years ago has a small breed worked its way to such a high spot on the list.” There's always next year – I'm still hoping my lil' one can make a comeback, too!

3most of the people i know personally either have a
1. lab
2. beagle
3. any kind of terrier (cairn, jack russell) - they are fairly common.
The beagle is a great dog, but I wish there was more popularity for the Miniature Pinscher (mine is awesome...but after seeing some others out there...I wonder if she is the exception not the rule)

5Surprise surprise. Labs and goldens top the list, as usual. (They are great dogs, though)
6Yahoo Doxies! My guy is a doxie mix (we think with rat terrier but who knows). Doxies are so silly looking i love them.
7wakupandora - my old neighbor had a shiba inu, she was the CUTEST thing ever, but they didn't train her well and she was SUPER aggresive. She was SUPER CUTE tho!!
I have a westie. They are definitely getting more common in my area.
8I'm surprised that bulldogs aren't on there, or pugs. I guess I should be thankful, since they're already hideously overbred. Popularity has its price for some breeds.
9i cant believe beagles are so high. i have one and love him to pieces... but they are a handful!!!

16My family had always owned small dogs growing up so when my husband convinced me to get a lab I was a little bit worried. Now we have 2 of them and I agree - they are the best dogs ever!
17My favorite isn't on the list. I can't wait until I can get a Scottish Terrier.
