While the American Kennel Club releases an ordered list of the top 10 most popular dog breeds based on the previous year's registered numbers, I decided to host my own informal survey here on PetSugar to see which pooch our readers picked as the most common. Choosing from the most popular dogs from 2006, you decided that this year's list toppers would be . . .

Labrador retrievers! Whether chocolate, yellow, or black, these perennial favorites topped the list last year . . . so they're a likely bet to once again reign supreme. If you haven't voted yet, don't forget to take your pick because I'll be comparing our final rankings to the official ones released by the AKC in January.

Those puppies are soooo fricken cute
1I LUV labs! They are so cute and friendly. After some extensive research, this is the breed I've decided is best for me. I'm getting myself a chocolate lab this new year. Gotta have a chocolate lab...I'm a chocoholic!
2yay for chocolate labs!! they are awesome.
3i have always wanted a golden retriever!
4I love labs! Those puppies are adorable. But I'm more partial to Golden Retrievers.
5Labs are so adorable! My dog is half Lab and half Rottweiler...I love BOTH breeds
6my neighbor has a dog thats have lab, half golden retriever.... It is the cutest BIGGEST dog ever
7Please go to Petfinder.com before a breeder.
Also, I've read that many landlords drastically raise the damage deposit for people with yellow labs because they can be so destructive - my husband's aunt's yellow lab chewed her kitchen cupboards, interior brick wall, furniture, and outside deck. (Just an aside, but our one year old malamute ate some of the siding off of our house and for a while all the videos we returned had bite marks in them).
Also, The Dogwhisperer is a really great resource for anyone with a dog or thinking about getting a dog. Don't just get a puppy because you think it's cute! Investigate the breed and talk to other owners of that breed to find out if its right for you.
