Next up in the Best of 2007 poll were topics and news stories that had the most comments and votes on PetSugar this year. According to my list of stories that originally sparked the most debates, the most controversial story was . . .

To Declaw or Not Declaw. The controversial subject was fiercely debated (and defended) with over 100 comments on this hot-button issue following the original post!

I'm hesitant to reopen this topic but I read through the comments on the other post and noticed that no one brought up the option of a tendonectomy as possible option to declawing.
1Instead of cutting off the first digit, a small piece (about 3 millimeters) of the tendon that extends the claws is removed. Since the actual nail isn't removed, it will continue to grow. Owners of cats with tendonectomies will need to clip nails on a regular basis.
I know a lot of veterinarians won't perform a tendonectomy without first having a professional relationship with the pet owner to see if they are responsible enough to clip the nails on a regular basis.
My cat, Gadget, has had a tendonectomy. It was done the at the same time that I neutered him. His recovery time was the same as recovering from being sterilized. Gadget was running around without hesitation in less than 4 days. He still makes biscuits on all soft objects, still scratches on his scratcher, never bites and has never pottied outside of the litterbox.
I know some people will still find this loathsome, but I wanted to throw it out there.
Happy New Year all!

Good times for all.
