North is normally a pretty quiet pup that only occasionally barks at a knock at the door or a ringing telephone. However, a guaranteed, ten-minute tizzy starter is the buzzer at my building's entranceway. My friends know to always phone but never ring when they arrive, but for deliveries or unexpected guests, I'm left no choice but to answer the door while I'm trying to talk him down.
This is the same pup who is virtually unaffected by fire trucks (unless we're crossing the street), thunder, and fireworks . . . but, in addition to the door buzzer, he hates the slamming of metal shop gates. My best guess is the loudness – and closeness – is what always sets him off. Is he all alone here in his silliness or do you have pets that react to loud, surprising noises? I've got a used (i.e. adopted!) Black Smoke Persian boy that for whatever reason, is deathly afraid of the sound of a cracking ice cube tray. He will run out of the kitchen like his life depends on it. I just try to freshen my supply of ice when he is out of the room.
1my pets are just scared of the blender, vaccuum and blowdryer
2My dog Daisy is afraid of almos any loud sounds (firecrakers, vaccuumm, blowdryer, etc.)
My otehr dog, nino, is younger, he can stand those loud noises, but he "jumps" and "falls" with a little "ih uh" of his toy.
3All of my dogs go crazy when the doorbell rings, but Tootsie is afraid of the cat's purring! I think she thinks it is growling. Dallas is not scared of loud noises usually. She will stand right next to my dad when he is using the weed whacker and walks around with the vacuum. So weird! She does hate the blow dryer, not because it's loud, because it means that I'm leaving!
4My kitties dive under the bed when anyone rings the doorbell, which works out pretty well since all my friends knock, so when deliveries or service people show up it's handy to have them out of the way.
5My border collie is deathly afraid of thunder and lightning. The summer months are no fun here in NYC. She always tries to burrow herself into the farthest corner of my closet.
6Has North had a previous home? That can tell/offer so much information, and most likely help with a solution!
7My Jack Russell puppy, Olive, goes absolutely nuts when someone opens or closes blinds-she jumps and barks and bites at them (if I don't watch her, she will jump high enough to chew them!). It's odd because she doesn't react like that towards anything else-not even the door. She's usually pretty happy-go-lucky.
