The (other) star of I Am Legend was not discovered on the streets of NYC or at a Hollywood casting call – Abbey, the 3-year-old German Shepherd, who appears in this new film alongside Will Smith, was hand picked (and rescued) from a California kennel. Experienced trainer, Steve Berens, selected and offered three weeks of intensive coaching to the pooch before introducing her to the rest of the cast. While there may have been some "creative differences" at the start (she barked at Will when he first walked up), after a short while, the two became friends and traveled to New York together to shoot this film. She stepped up to the role of co-star with style and grace, performing beautifully throughout the shooting. The only thing she wouldn't agree to do was play fetch – a backup pooch had to be called in to do the deed for that scene. I guess that would be too dog-like for her! After the film wrapped, Will offered a touching description of leaving his co-star:
It was painful. She is way on another plane of connecting to what your energy is, what your feelings are, and protective. It’s beautiful.
I can't wait to check her big screen debut — the film opens today nationwide.

I am going to own a dog that looks exactly like that one day... sooo sooo sooo prettY!!!
1Awww sucha gorgoues pup
2Im so happy that a lot of the dogs that are used in films and tv these days are shelter rescues. Its a great second chance for them. I totally get the not playing fetch thing. My little rescue dog rarely ever plays fetch. When he does it has to be really specific. I think it comes from nobody playing with him as a puppy
3Wow! That is sooo cool. I'm going to see this movie tonight. I'll appreciate the dog so much more knowing that she's a rescue puppy.
4That looks like such a good movie. I cant wait to see it in theaters!!!
5police dogs are scary!
6I'd like to see this movie but I heard something happens to her in the end so now I don't know if I can handle seeing it!
7But I love Will and i love his statement. He's great!
I just saw this movie yesterday! That dog is AWESOME. But be prepared, all I am saying is bring some tissues!
8this movie made me love my dog even more!
9she was sooo adorable, and protective and just the perfect dog in the movie~ ugh, like the best dog ever! now after watching the movie, i want a german shepherd!!!
10If the dog dies in the movie, I cannot watch it, I will cry for days over it. I'm such a baby, I cry when the animals "die" on TV in movies or shows. She is gorgeous though...I have a weak spot for Shepherds and this one is so pretty. I'm glad more trainers are getting dogs from rescues - those dogs need love, too.
11im so going to watch it because first its got will smith in it and hes such a great actor and second because the dog is so cute and i have always loved german shepards and i think its going to be a great movie!!
12the movie was great. i luv that dog..and made appreciate my little ponce even more. =)
13I can't WAIT to see this movie!
14Awww, I'm glad they rescued her!
15I wasn't too thrillled with the movie, but her performance was perfect! Such a cute pup!
16aww! i saw the movie on friday. she is adorable!!!
17Who has Abbey now?
18I saw the movie last night and you would have never guessed she was a rescue dog. She did amazing stuff and seemed to look at Will Smith like she knew what he was saying to her.
For those of you who have seen the film, don't you think Will Smith should get an award for that ONE scene with her in the lab?
19Beautiful doggie! Great story on her!
20The "Dog Whisperer" Ceasar Milan discusses what great dog owners Will and Jada are in his book "Ceasar's Way." It sounds like he really connected with her as well. Very sweet.
21Oh my god, the dog was the best part of the movie. LOVED her.
22Alright People, Listen up
Abbey Is "NOT", i repeat "NOT" a rescue dog. She is
champion sired out of excellent lines and was HAND PICKED which is right but Not Rescued from a gorgeous 14 acre ranch that is described as a fantastic place for dogs to live. She was bought
from Kimmelot Kennels http://www.kimmelot.com and did know her name which she's had since birth. How do I know this you
ask? Simple I own one of her sisters. Abbey is a gorgeous german shepherd and I had the privlige to play with her on a constant basis and She was fantastic and used to play fetch with her
Oobie all the time. All this slander against Kimmelot makes me angry and to say that she was a rescue is unbelieveable. She is no more a rescue than my german shepherd. I think someone
twisted the trainers words because Steve Berens who came and took Abbey with him had nothing bad to say at all the day he was there.
Now that the air is cleared. Hello.
