Hayden Panettiere attempted some real-life heroism on Tuesday when she, and other animal activists, paddled out into the open sea on surfboards to try to rescue dolphins from an annual dolphin slaughter in Taiji, Japan. The mission was unsuccessful, however, as she and the others were threatened and forced to turn back... and the fishermen continued.
"This baby stuck its head out and kind of looked as us, and the thought that the baby is no longer with us is very difficult," Panettiere, who stars in the NBC show Heroes, said after coming ashore in tears.
Hayden is a known animal-lover, seen here with her two dogs, Penny Lane and Madison. About 14,000 dolphins are killed for food in Japan each year in these coastal hunts, which involve herding groups of dolphins into a cove where they are netted and killed by divers.

1It's so sad
ICK! I had no idea that they were being EATEN.
Good on her for trying though. Nice to see a
young starlet in activism.
2Wow dolphin meat is very high in Mercury cadmium and DDT. I Heard that the japanese government is proposing that Dolphin be served in school lunches! While i am not some Greenpeace/PETA Nut i really cant see how it should be allowed to consume a meat so obviously tainted and harmful.
I couldnt do what Hayden did, so I applaud her for trying.
too bad the japanese government has sanctioned even more hunts for the future.
3Go Hayden! Stick up 4 what you believe in.
4I saw the video on live leak and started balling.
The video is so disturbing and to see these men in Japan killing these poor dolphins made me sick.
When Hayden and her friends tried to swim out to set some free the fisherman were putting the boat's propeller near them and trying to hit them with these hooks.
It was disturbing.
5Im not the biggest fan of Hayden but I really have to commend her for this. Even though she did not save the dolphins that day she brought soooooo much attention to this country about what is going on in Japan
6She was really brave to take action. But that is such a traumatizing experience. I don't know how I'd get over witnessing such a barbaric event like that.
7It's great that she is getting behind a great cause at a young age.
8the video was disturbing on so many levels. http://www.savejapandolphins.org
9So heartbreaking.
10My God! I bawled when I saw the footage of the massacre. It broke my heart as well. We need to get word out there that this is going on and needs to be stopped immediately! This makes me outraged!
11aw cute puppies
12I saw some footage on the news and I couldn't even watch it was so horrible. The cove was all red, it was heart breaking. Dolphins are so smart too, I think that's what upsets me about it!
13geez. i had no idea. that is absolutely terrible. i can't watch the footage..i volunteered for the SPCA for 5 years and we had a volunteer video we used to show at orientations, and i could never bring myself to watch it. I hate watching defenseless creatures getting hurt.
14Well, there sure are a lot of vegetarians here!
If any of you eat meat/fish/whatever, you're killing it, so don't be so surprised.
15its good that a young hollywood actress is doing something productive with her time rather than wasting away through drugs and alcohol.....its awesome that hayden is able to do the things she cares most about and i think she deserves all the support in the world!!!
