After nearly three years of litigation (!), the case of Dexter has come to an end. When Doreen Houseman and Eric Dare ended their relationship in May 2006, a New Jersey court ruled Eric could keep their pug since it was in his possession at the time. However, earlier this year, an appeals panel reversed the decision saying the judge neglected to consider the dog's "subjective value", making him more like a family heirloom or work of art that cannot simply be awarded to one party for a face-value payment — Doreen received $1,500 — no one can measure Dexter's exact worth.
Now the pup will rotate every five weeks between the homes of the separated couple — do you agree with the "subjective value" decision overturning the custody ruling?

My husband and I have an agreement - if we split up on mutual terms - I get one dog and he gets the other during the week, and on weekends we'd take turns having both dogs. If one of us cheats, the other one gets both dogs during the week. The one who cheated could take the dogs every other weekend.
Gosh my dogs are worth way more than the adoption fee we paid for them - they're part of my mental happiness and wellbeing!
1You are nicer than me, Yogaforlife. I told my husband there is no chance in hell he would get the girls- mutual break up or not. I tell him I will consider supervised visitation for the girls sake. They do love their father.
2If they hate each other so much that they couldn't have decided this on their own, I don't know. It just seems weird to me.
Someone must have been really really bad in that relationship.
I honestly wouldn't even know what to do.
3I'm sorry, but Zena has no value. She's priceless. I could never put a price on her. If I ever married and brought Zena into the home and then we decided to divorce, you better believe Zena is coming home with me. No ifs, ands or buts. That is, if my parents allowed me to take her as she is technically their dog.
The pug really should have stayed in Eric's care as he owned the dog before they got together. I don't want to know how much strain the poor pup is going to have traveling every five weeks between houses.
4Animals are not heirlooms or works of art. They are like members of the family (furry children). I think that if I were to get divorced my hubby and I would argue over little, but when it came to our 2 dogs I think it would be a fight to the death!
5who cares about the house? the dogs are what's important.
Geez, I guess nobody considered the dog's well-being in this decision. I don't think being traded off every other week is really fair to the dog. My dog HATES change. I'm sure she wouldn't appreciate this.
6On a related note, when my ex and I broke up, he said I could take the dog, but later accused me of stealing her and demanded financial compensation. I don't answer his calls any longer, but this sort of scares me. Looks like he might have a legal argument.
The travel issue doesn't bother me. My family lives about 90 mins. away and once every 4-6 weeks my husband, girls and I pack up and spend the weekend at my parent's house. The girls really seem to like going to their grandparent's and they LOVE riding in the car. They go on many vacations with us throughout the year and to our vacation house a few times a year in the summer, so I think they would be okay with traveling back and fourth.
The arrangement might work out okay for the pup.
