The Pet Ate WHAT?! This Year's Most Unusual Insurance Claims
Dogs (and cats!) eat the darndest things. I've rounded up and surveyed several inedible snacks but these take the cake. Seriously.
Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) named the oddest claims they've gotten each month for the last year and will award the winner the first ever Hambone Award. In case you missed this famous case, that's named after the pooch who got stuck in the fridge . . . and helped himself to the whole Thanksgiving ham while waiting to be found.

Ugh, I guess I should share my embarrassing/scary story. A couple of weeks ago our beagle had to have emergency surgery because his digestive system was at a standstill, along with his liver, spleen, and kidneys being enlarged. Nothing showed up on the xray or ultrasound, so the vets were very worried about what caused this. Hanging out of a hole in his intestines was a tiny (1 in tops) piece of "fabric." The fabric happened to be one of my thongs that I was missing that he must've gotten out of the hamper while we weren't home. The vet thought it was hilarious (and told EVERYONE, which I thought was unprofessional) and I thought it was mortifying. Not to mention his surgery and followup totaled well over $2,500 and we were only hours away from losing my pup if I didn't take him to the vet for an ordinary stomachache.
1Sorry about the long post. Moral of the story, close every single door, buy hard hampers that your pups can't get into, and don't expect all vets to really care about the well being of your dog over the best gossip
2My Benny swallowed a corn cob whole one time at picnic and two weeks later had surgery for it. My Maia got ahold of 6 packs of gum (she was in her crate and managed to squeeze her front leg out far enough to pull a bag of stocking stuffers sitting on the floor into the crate!). I had to give her hydrgoen peroxide so she'd vomit up all 36 pieces of gum, which I counted!
I think all dogs eventually swallow something they shouldn't be eating which makes me wonder how on earth would they survive without us!
