We just started bringing our dog on the boat and I would also recommend working on swimming skills BEFORE taking a boat ride. Reuben surprisingly jumped in the water for the first time, and good thing we were moored only 20 ft from shore because he swam all the way back to land! Luckily he figured out how to swim instantly, but if he hadn't, he couldn't been in real trouble.
