While I'd recommend tossing (in the garbage) any tennis balls with signs of fraying or peeling rubber, it's a good idea to wash those you'll be keeping this season. Think of all the dirt from endless games of fetch and throw them in the washing machine with some towels and pet-safe detergent.
After the fuzzy balls are cleaned up, you can air out or pop them in a dryer for a special trick. If you add a tennis ball to the dryer, it can help fluff up your drying towels, down bedding or other clothes that need an extra puff and fluff – bonus!

I never thought to wash the tennis balls before. We just replace them when they get extra gross. Maybe I'll try this with the current batch of grungy balls and see if it works.
1For the sake of your doggies please wash them immediately after buying and before you toss them to your beloved pooch - think of all the chemicals that are on them from coloring and fabrication...
2Last night on The Lazy Environmentalist (Sundance Channel) they said that tennis balls are bad for pets b/c they contain like 50 times the amount of lead that's harmful to people. Has anyone ever heard this?
