North loves his Kong ($6 and up) frozen with peanut butter and plain, nonfat yogurt, but for some reason seems less interested when it's stuffed with treats. It's hard enough for me to squeeze them in there, so I'm betting he gets tired of working them out, too. I can never seem to fit more than three of his favorite peanut butter bones in the small style.
After, I picked up a medium-sized Kong a couple days ago – recommended for pups 15-30 pounds – I planned a new strategy of fulfillment to maximize the space.
Get my five steps when you read more.
- Step one. Spoon about one-half tablespoon of unsalted peanut butter inside.
- Step two. Add in three small bones (such as P-Nuttier biscuits).
- Step three. If desired, add a couple more special treats like these Sojos Good Dog Treats to switch it up. You should have slightly over half the space still visibly empty.
- Step Four. Next, fill with a combo of kibble and Natural Balance to fit in the cracks.
- Step Five. Look at the small hole on the opposite end – you should add more moist food until you are able to see the peanut butter pushing up at that side. Finish off with one more treat sticking out and you're ready to go!
Keep in mind this is over your pup's daily treat ratio so save this super stuffed Kong for very special times only!

The shelter I volunteer with also freezes 'em... makes it more difficult to get the stuff out!
1I use mashed sweet potato for my dog and then freeze it. Keeps him occupied for hours!
2I put a treat in the bottom because my pup can't get anything that makes it into the very bottom of the king. A treat kind of "plugs" the kong. I add grain-free wet food (Nature's Variety or Wellness, often 95-100% meat formulas), and sprinkle in kibble from the free trial sized bags that always come when I order big bags of food from my online food source.
Baxter sits and stares at the freezer longingly right after I make his kongs for the week.
3I usually just shove a bunch of peanut butter in there and when I leave for work, that is how I lure Raja into her room that we put her in while we're gone.
4Any tips for washing Kongs? Are they dishwasher safe?
5the rescue i got moose from put cheese wiz in them which i don't since i won't even eat that stuff my self but he wont dig out hard treats like they sell for them but he will dig out peanut butter
6mfern64, My family usually washes them by hand, but use a baby bottle brush to clean the inside. It seems to work well.
Also try plain frozen yogurt! And carrots. My dog Bree goes CRAZY for carrots and bananas.
7My new German Shepard puppy is obsessed with ice cubes so we take one of his kongs and just fill it with water and freeze it- he loves it!
8mfern64 - I just got a brush at my local pet store for about $8 that's shaped like a Kong. I was skeptical about trying it at first, but it works great! Definitely worth a few bucks. Here's a link to it: http://www.barktownstore.com/servlet/the-2/Kong-Cleaning-Brush-Treat/Det...
9I'm just going to bite it and get a Kong for Gracie. She has a Kong Wubba that she popped the squeaker in ages ago...that dog is death for a squeaker in anything. I do know that she adores peanut butter though, so this is probably worth it
