Introducing large quantities of rich "people food" into a pet's diet on Thanksgiving is bad for their tummies! In fact, some typical holiday fare should never be fed to pets. One sure way to be certain no one slips up is to place the appropriate portion of your furry friend's normal snacks in a convenient location. Point out the healthy treats to your guests and encourage them to pamper your pals with extra petting or playtime . . . not to feed the snacks all at once.
The following items should never be fed to pets:
- Turkey bones
- Turkey skin
- Stuffing with onions
- Salty or spicy veggies
- Pumpkin pie
- Sweet potato casserole
- Any desserts, especially chocolate

Dog-Safe Snacks:
- Small piece of white-meat turkey
- A few cooked, unseasoned carrots or green beans
- Spoonful of canned pumpkin (not pie filling)
- Sweet Potato Dog Chips
- Small apple or banana slice

1He'll get a little turkey (i'm just cooking a breast for me and my boyfriend) and probably a little pumpkin. Maybe we'll go by the store and get him a special treat.
2My two little Chihuahuas get some special applesauce-oatmeal "cookies" I've made just for them sans sugar as a snack. And I'm always good for a turkey or chicken and rice casserole made especially for them during the holidays.
After all...with all those delicious scents filtering through the house during the holidays it would be down right Scrooge-like not to include them in the festivities.
3You can totally feed your dog turkey bones and skin... just make sure it's not cooked, only raw! It's the best for them: a tasty, nourishing toothbrush. We give our guy the turkey neck and, depending on how I cook the turkey, the back too... I just cut it out before I do the final meat prep.
4Pumkin is great to have on hand for your dog year round as it is great for soothing upset tummies. Make sure to get the unsweetened canned stuff.
I can't say enough good things about feeding a raw diet!

Logan got the meat of the cooked turkey neck (no bone!) in his Kong with a little bit of pumpkin and some peanut butter. It kept him busy while we were eating, and he got some yummies on Thanksgiving too!
5Our dog and her visiting pup friend each got a peanut butter filled Kong, a small piece of turkey meat and a new toy bone to play with. They were happy campers indeed!
