I'd have to say my favorite part of last night's events, was when the president-elect announced to his young daughters, "Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House." Now, this wasn't news to me but many people haven't been following the Obamas' doggie decisions as carefully as I have. He originally made the promise that, no matter the outcome, a puppy would make them a party of five after the campaign was over . . . and now that means a canine will be also moving into the White House come January!
I can't decide when the pooch will join the family – before they move or after they're settled – and I'm not totally certain what type of dog it'll be. After all, Michelle Obama told Entertainment Tonight that they would be rescuing, but 10-year-old Malia seems set on a goldendoodle, a mixed (Golden Retriever/Poodle) pup that often warrants a higher price tag based on their hypoallergenic qualities (and did I mention the cute?!).
What do you think the Obama dog will be in the end . . . and when do you expect we'll meet this new furball?

1While I would love to see a bunch of wieners in the White House, I hope Michelle sticks with her word and rescue's.
2I hope it's a Golden Retriever/Poodle mix. I sooo cried when he said this. Lost it!
3I would love to see yorkies in the white house, but I think they will get a lab or maybe a golden retriever.
4I think a goldendoodle is a great choice. I do think it'd be best to wait until they move into the big house first. That way, the whole family will adapt to their new headquaters together.

7I really hope they rescue one from a shelter but I also understand that one of the girls is allergic and they of course need to keep that in mind. It probably won't be a small dog or a very large one.

They should rescue a wheaten, they're such incredible dogs. We rescued ours thinking it was a golden retriever puppy but boy did he grow into that terrier! The perfect mid-size pup!

10Puppies are usually harder to find in a rescue, but it's possible! I REALLY hope they adopt/ rescue and I love that Michelle said they will ! (I live in Baltimore, maybe they will come to our shelter and adopt

13OMYGOSH - A Beagle!!! They are the best! But I know that may not be the best choice for someone who is allergic. Yorkie hair has the same Ph as a human!!
14I think a beagle would be super-cute. And they're nice family dogs. I would also suggest a Labrador, but as wonderful family pets they are, the Obamas may not want to since the Clintons had one during their stay at the White House.

18It would be great to see a rescue of some kind. If they were to get a pure bred dog, rescued or otherwise, a black and white curly Portuguese Water Dog would be really cute and they are non-allergenic! Or maybe a brown one...hmmmmmm.
19Getting a rescue is very rewarding, to see an improvement in a dog's physical and social well-being, however if one of the girls is allergic poodles are great, cavoodles are terribly cute, if I hadn't rescued my dog, that's what I would have picked

As for all this talk of goldipoos/goldendoodles, I genuinely hope they do not get this breed. I used to groom dogs, and believe me they have the worst behavior traits (energy of a golden, stupidity of a poodle). Not to mention they are not hypoallergenic as many people claim.

21I think a goldendoodle would be pefect!! At least if it haves the wonderful personality of the golden retriever, that's the perfect family dog!
22I think that they need to consider A LOT of things before choosing a dog. Its not as if they are going to live a lifestyle that will allow them to put the time and effort into a strong breed dog or even a rescue for that matter. I think the need to go with a non-shedding small to medium sized dog that is good around kids. But who knows what they will choose
23They can still adopt from breed-specific rescues if they MUST have a pure bred. I am partial to Pibbles. I own and have worked in Pitbull rescue and they are lovable, smart and loyal.

When any president is in office the family pet that they have is usually very popular b/c everyone wants to have the same thing that the president has and if they adopt a pet instead of buying from a breeder then a lot of people will adopt. Just b/c his daughter has allergies is no reason for them to buy from a breeder. There are plenty of rescues out there who cater to a specific breed of dog. The AKC has already listed a number of breeds that are hypoallergenic and among those breeds is the Chinese Crested. I know that the thought of having a hairless dog is a little odd to most people but what most people don't know is that there are 2 types of Cresties. The hairless which has hair on only the head, feet, and tail. And the powderpuff which is covered with long silky hair. They are none shedding and 99.7 percent hypoallergenic. There are many Chinese Crested rescues out there as well and they are very helpful with placing the perfect dog with a family they occasionally have puppies as well as adult dogs.

27Russia I am SO in agreement with you! Many people think the only way to get a purebred dog is through a breeder or (SHUDDER) a pet store. Not true -- there are many rescue organizations out there for ALL PUREBRED dogs... and although it's sometimes tough to get a purebred puppy from a rescue, it's possible (and I think if the first family said "we would like a purebred x puppy from a rescue", a rescue group would make it happen.
I really hope that they do adopt or rescue, and I REALLY hope this leads more people into shelters to find their next pet
28I think it would send an awesome message out there if the family adopted a rescued pit bull.
29Personally, I think the previous "adoption" was a con. This was the chosen dog all along & it was sent to training for that period & not at all previously adopted by a family.
