It's no surprise that I love baby animals, but I wouldn't want to just wake up one morning to a slew of new pets! Especially since I recall a childhood pal who went from having Roxy and Foxy to having five Guinea Pigs – quite a mysterious result when her mom (thought she) had purchased two girl pets – and how sad we were when her parents told her she could only keep one baby.
Now, I never gave "fixing" much thought in the scenario but a recent article brought this practice to my attention. Most of you spay or neuter your dogs and cats, but what about the exotic pets or small mammals you've owned?

Do people neuter hamsters? I thought I had bought two males to find out that I was wrong. I ended up with 15 hamsters in the matter of weeks. Sheesh.
1I didn't know they neutered hamsters or guinea pigs, although I did see a Vet ER show on Animal Planet where they tried to suck fluid out of a guinea pig's lungs that had pneumonia. I thought it was a little odd at the time - it was so small, and the vet kept telling the owner he didn't think it would work, but she wanted him to try. The guinea pig died, and she was really broken up about it. It's weird to think someone could develop the same attachment to a guinea pig as I have to my puppy, but I guess people do. I just remember my childhood guinea pig Oreo would just pee on my hand then bite me, so we didn't really bond all that strongly.
2My two (male) rabbits are neutered. It's the only way they can live together and not fight to the death!
