I can see the merits of training a cat. Though I'm not into silly pet tricks...
When I adopted my cat, he had already been taught to answer to his name. It's so unbelievably helpful. When he disappears off into the house somewhere, I can just yell out his name to find him (unless he's being moody).
He used to have a bad habit of jumping on counters, so he learned "get down" passively too.

It didn't go very well.
