phew, not the foods that I use...petsugar, may I ask what you feed North? I would love to make a switch to something more natural.

How did the PEOPLE contract salmonella poisoning? And what happened to their pets?

I hate reading thing, I always worry! But I feed B-Bop Wellness Core and it's never recalled so we're good. Phew.
And I think the people contracted it by handling the food and then not washing their hands. Not sure what happened to the animals

My Layla girl has half of a recalled bag of Pedigree left, so I'll be taking that back to the store. Coincidentally, I had an infection two weeks ago that is listed as a symptom of salmonella poisoning. Thankfully I'm okay, but it makes me wonder...

Geez. what is the deal with petfood? i feed MAX Iams and science diet, so he's ok. but seriously they need to start having stricter standards!

Sadie is currently eating a couple of different types of food, but none on the list! It was hard to get her to eat the Science Diet that she had been eating since I got her, so I am on a mission to find her a good food. She stole her buddy's Iams during our recent evacuation. I tried that, but apparently she was only interested in the stealing part and not truly the food! We are currently trying Innova EVO and Wellness. She only seems interested if I doctor it with wet food and water and warm it up. I would love to hear food suggestions.

we've been using a rotation of wellness core, orijen and nature's variety raw medallions. NEVER the raw and kibble in same meal, though!!

Our dogs went right for the orijen when we tried it - it actually smells fresh and they finished the whole bowl. Same with wellness core ocean formula.

We also sometimes use Sojourner's Europa food mix or The Honest Kitchen Thrive mix. They are awesome, never leftovers on those nights!

If you are having issue getting your dog to eat a food, maybe pouring a tad of sodium free/low sodium chicken broth on it might help? Or spraying salmon oil on it? Its good for their coat!

My animals all get Wellness.

Moonlisa - If your dog will eat green beans or canned pumpkin that would be a good start. Just mix in a cup of beans to the dry kibble. Make sure whatever you pick is low in calories/fat etc. Also cut back on kibble amount. You don't want to add to the caloric intact.

Axle and Newton are both on Timberwolf Dakota Bison. I've never had any problems and they both do wonderfully on the same food, which I thought was odd, for the huge difference between the two of them. Newton has a stomach of steal and he weighs 12lbs. Axle will get sick if he has any major changes in his diet (we can switch flavors of Timberwolf with upset tummy), and he weighs around 70lbs.

There are some great sites out there to help you find quality foods. I lost the link to the site I used to help me find their food, and I can't for the life of me find it again. If you want a quality food, I do suggest you look into Timberwolf.

My friends always made fun of me for washing my hands each time I touched the dry dog food but thank God I did!

This is why I don't feed my dogs cheap food. They are either on a high end kibble that is actually good for them or they are on a raw diet. I'll never have to worry about these pet food scares.

Check out the following brands - Innova, Nature's Variety, Evo, Orijen, Evanger's, Merrick and Wellness. I have fed my dogs these brands and they love them. In fact I switch up their kibble between all of these brands at different times to supplant their Raw Diet.

You won't find these brands at a Petsmart, Petco or any other mainline store. You'll need to find a mom & pop retail pet supply store.

I hate seeing people feed their pets food whose quality isn't even fit for human consumption. Most of the time people think they are buying the best because they see the food in a vet's office or it's a brand name they recognize. The ingredients tell a different story though. All of the brands I listed above are mostly meats and very little filler products. They are 5 & 6 star rated pet foods, 6 star is the highest you can get btw.

My dogs eat Innova Evo and love it. Even Sara with her cancer can eat it (she is not allowed more than 5% carbs a day, and Evo is 95% meat). The canned and the dry food are both excellent.

For those on Wellness, watch out for the Wellness Fish formula ...it caused bladder stones in my dog, and the vet told me it has happened in a lot of his patients (especially cats). So if your dog or cat is already prone to bladder issues you might want something else.

Cuba is on raw or Solid Gold, Evo, or Orjen's.

Brando gets Ultramix. I'm not a fan of the cheap stuff either.

Bailey is on prescription diet for bladder issues (she had crystals in her urine when she was on eukanuba)...does anyone know a food that would work well with this issue?

I switched to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul. I would like to use Innova Evo or Solid Gold, but can't find it where I live.

I was convinced to switch after a trainer told me that you can actually feed your dog 1/2 as much of the expensive stuff, since there's less "filler" in it - so even though it may cost twice as much, it comes out even.

I had thought Iams WAS high quality b/c it was the most expensive at the grocery store, but have since learned otherwise.

I feed my cats and dog science diet only so no worries for me

I feed my dogs Solid Gold dry food, and mix in wet food (Evangers or Wellness) or fresh meat to keep it interesting for them. If you want to feed your pet a certain kind of food, but can't find it locally, many small pet stores can order it for you no problem if their distributer carries it.

my babies eat Nutro Ultra~ I recommend this brand to everyone! they don't use animal by-products.

Ceasar eats the Purina ProPlan Select. DH has become a dog food connoisseur since the last recall, and this one doesn't use the by-products either.

My dog is on Nutro Natural. The only other pet food he has eaten is Eukbana, which his breeder had him on and we feed him thru his puppy months. (He just turned a year old and graduated to big pug food! Squeee!)

The cats are usually on Nutro. The type varies. One of our late cats had bad hairballs, another had ibs... Thankfully, our cats are healthy at the moment and require no special food.

Chase is on rotation between Orijen,Wellness CORE,EVO and ACANA which is made by the same company as Orijen. Chubstaaa Petco just started caring Wellness products so lets hope the quality stays the same. =)
Brands like Purina,Scinece Diet and IAMS still aren' the best because that have corn or corn gluton as one of there main ingredients.

i work at petco and my store, Tysons corner VA!!, pulled questionable bags right off the shelves as soon as there was a mention. please ask when you go into a pet store if they know of any recalls going on or in this case if they've pulled the product.
btw, i feed my dogs wellness and they used to eat iams, now they wont eat anything else. its great stuff.

p.s. not to plug petco again but they have a pretty great natural section. solid gold, wellness, halo, nutros, avoderm, blue buffalo, pinnacle, etc.

Solid Gold and Wellness both make wonderful foods. Halo is over priced for the fillers that are in the first four ingredients. Don't walk RUN RUN RUN away from Nutro not only have they havd recalss but they still have corn gluten in their foods. Avoderm has too many grains for my taste and not enough protein, also avacado is a do not feed to dogs. Blue Buffalo is actually a very nice budget friendly dog food I shy away from the Blue Organics thats just a gimic to get you to buy but their Wilderness food is very good for someone on a budget.Pinnacle is made by the same people as Avoderm it's light on protein and I don't understand why they use Whole oat flour instad of just whole oat.

alot of the natural foods that we carry are definately better than some other big chain pet stores but actually we carry things like nutro as sort of a transitional food. they are not the top choice in terms of natural food because there is stuff thats alot better but i talk to some customers that usually buy say pedigree, and they get it because its cheap. i dont want to show them right of the bat something that is way out of what they usually spend because i know that they probably are not going to go for it no matter how good it is. ill mention the great stuff but something like Nutro is moderately priced and is a hell of a lot better than pedigree or dog chow so it makes for a easy transition for them and their dog will be a lot healthier. then maybe when they come back in i can show them the wellness etc.

@Chase24 Thanks so much for your advice. One my money situation stabilizes a bit more, perhaps I will be able to look into some of those brands.

@Noxcatt Thank you so much for being one of those helpful types in petco! Nutro is a mid-road brand and right now that is okay with me. The vertebrate that eats the best and healthiest in this house is the parrot. Let me tell ya, expensive.

Maybe once I can afford fresh food for myself rather than my bunnies and bird I can look at alternatives. But the money crunch is hitting everyone and damn at least they aren't stuck with old roy.

I have tried almost every high end brand of natural dog food there is. I would recommend more than anything Wellness brand dog food. I use the Core ones and the mixes as well. They have helped both my dogs tremendously. I resuced a dog recently and when I got him he was a mess. Skin and bones, alot of hair missing, not very active at all. After being on Wellness for like 2 months, his hair is back and like silk, he is perfect weight and has more energy than my younger dog. Don't want to sound like a commercial but to me the Wellness brand is great and delivers on what they claim they will do. Petco by me in MN just recently picked up all the Wellness foods surpringsly which is great so now I don't have to drive 30+ mins to get it like I used to have too.
