Meet Trakr, the heroic pup who helped locate the last human survivor under about 30 feet of debris after the September 11 attacks. The German Shepherd (and his owner) were among the first search and rescue teams to arrive at Ground Zero, and I'm betting that's why he was deemed the most 'clone-worthy' canine by BioArts International in their competition offering someone a free chance to replicate their pet; a sample of Trakr's DNA will be transported to the South Korean lab of the Sooam Biotech Research Foundation, and the cloned dog could be ready later this year!

I think part of the reason people have issues with cloning animals is the use of phrases "the new dog will be ready later this year". That makes him sound like a product. A better way to look at it is to say that the cloned puppy would be born later this year, because other than a little genetic manipulation, the rest of the process is just like any other animal being born by artificial insemination. And no matter what happens, it's not going to be another Trakr - the pup will be his own guy who will still need all the training and love that Trakr got to become that kind of hero.

2He looks like such a sweetie. I read somewhere else that Trackr has some problems now that they think were caused by all the toxic air/debris he breathed in while searching for people on Sept 11. Poor guy. I'm sure the new pup will be just as loved and cherished as Trackr is.
3aww...he reminds me of my cousin's dog, Gunnar. RIP Gunnar. German Shepards are great dogs.
