I read somewhere that you're not supposed to keep a collar on at all times because dogs can choke if it gets caught on something.

I keep a collar on Princess (my chihuahua) at all times cause it has her ID tag on it. And I know it's unsafe to leash them to a collar so we do both

I never thought of her getting stuck on it playing around though... that's scary

They didn't have my option - Raider wears his collar and harness for walks only, in the house he's naked. Better for loving and less noise.

Harness and collar on my terrier for walks. He doesn't wear a collar around the house & garden. I was advised against ID tags by the local police and the breeder as this is how dog thieves operate. If they know the dogs name it's easier to catch them AND then they have your phone number to demand money for it's safe return. He's microchipped though.

Bop wears his harness for walks but that's it. When we first got him we put a collar on him and it ended up rubbing the hair off his neck and it never grew back. The doc says some dogs have more sensitive skin. Poor guy. So he's nakey at home. He does wear tags on his harness, I can see how that could be bad for pet stealers but I've also been able to return MANY dogs based on that. So it's sort of either or I guess.

PS - I wish they'd leave min pins ears floppy, they're so cute!

lucy wears her collar with all identification on it as well as her harness when out for a walk. indoors she has no collar or harness-safety and quieter.

Bella wears a collar and a harness when we walk her,
and she'll wear a collar when her "grandparents" are watching her,
just because it has her ID on it, and she's in a neighborhood she doesn't know.

Bella wears a collar all the time because we still have the odd accident with her and her tags jingle to indicate where she is. She wears a harness in the car for her seatbelt to clip to, but not for walkies because her legs seem to get caught in the lead with it

Cuba only wears his harness for walks at home he is naked. He never goes outside without being leashed up.

Tank wears a collar for id. Because he is a pug and his head and neck are about the same size, he also has a harness for extended walking.

Zena doesn't wear her cloth collar for walks considering she loves hunting bunnies and squirrels. On walks we continue training her so she retains what she's learned and she can improve on stays, so she wears a pinch collar. It's not a choke chain, which used incorrectly can cause damage to the esophagus of a dog and cause them to cough horridly. Pinch collars are actually the safest and most effective way of training a dog since it lightly pinches all around the neck. Zena literally knows how to get out of a harness, so harnesses are not an option.

At home, Zena wears a cloth collar during the day and no collar at night. The only tags she has are her Rabies tag (it's state mandated that a domestic dog or cat wear a Rabies tag) and her AKC microchip tag which says she has a microchip.

Lulu is microchipped, but no one is going to get that information unless she really escapes. We keep a collar on her at all times with her HomeAgain tag and an ID tag with her name and our phone number. I want to be safe in case she shoots out the front door or gets loose otherwise.

We use a harness each time we walk her because she's really sensitive about her neck. It's a little annoying having to snap her in each time we walk her, but it works well.

Sadie wears her collar all the time, the better to hear her! She has a matching step in harness for walks. She gets easily frightened, and she will work her head out of her collar on walks if something spooks her!

I don't keep a collar on my Kylee since she stays indoors other than playing out in the backyard sometimes. I have a leading harness for her when we go out for walks.

collar with id tags at all times when outside. no harnesses for them - they are competition obedience dogs and walk in heel position on a loose lead when we leave the house.

Collar usually, & harness for when she rides
in a vehicle. The harness attaches to the vehicle seat belt
to keep her safe, in case of an accident or sudden stop.

My boys only wear their collars for walks. I used to leave Dior's collar on him all the time and then one night I woke up to noise in my bathroom and he had gotten the collar trapped around his mouth and head and had scratched himself to point there was blood everywhere...he's never worn a collar in the house again! Also both of my boys are microchipped.
