Hold on to your fins, 'cause this story may have you seeing red! Waterfront vendors in Qingdao, China, are selling sealed plastic keychains filled with goldfish as souvenirs! The keychains are being printed with a picture of Huanhuan, one of the five Olympic mascots for the 2008 games, and being pawned off as unofficial merchandise for this year's sailing events. Not surprisingly, a representative from the UK's RSPCA says the little goldies aren't expected to survive in their confined space for long:
“The fish would survive just a few hours, and would be lucky to make it from the manufacturers to the point of sale. This product shows a shocking lack of respect for a living thing and should be withdrawn from sale. We can’t understand why anyone would want to buy such a thing."
Poor fishies! I'm surprised that these were ever allowed to be made!

5This makes me as angry as the hand painted hermit crabs for sale in the mall. The fish thing reminds me of my senior prom when the juniors hosting the prom put beta fishes in a bowl with a floating candle. Super smart right! This infuriates me.

I used to get mad at carnivals in the US carrying goldfish as prizes cause those suckers get carried around in sloshy bags for hours by 7 year olds....

16This coming from a country that knowingly skins animals alive to supply fur for clothing does not surprise me! And, Yes I have seen the undercover video so I know this is true, and it is as horrific as it sounds! I hope vistors to the Games will make their feelings about animal cruelty understood by the Chinese. Better yet nobody should go, and we should boycott ALL Chinese products - that will get the message home.
17I agree with Foxie. I think God gave people stewardship over the earth and other animals. Stewardship (per Webster): Careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care.
