While North doesn't show much interest in the closed window (unless we're feeding the birds), whenever I have it cracked just the teensiest bit, he loves to put his paws up and sniff that fresh air coming in. Now my window ledges weren't in the greatest shape when we moved in but, if I owned my home, I would consider getting one of these Sill Shields to match any window I'd have open.
Made from heavy duty, outdoor grade PVC, these attachable shields protect the surface beneath them, while still hiding the scratches better than painted wood. With three sizes of depths and three for widths, they're designed to fit most windows – and, starting at $12.95, totally affordable too. To see another piccy of my lil guy trying to get a good view from our top floor apt when you read more.

1Cute pic!
2Adorable! And great product... my pup tears up our ledges staking out squirrels!
3Great idea for a product. North is so cute peeking out! My dog loves to look out of our apartment windows, too
4those pics are sooooooooooooo cute!
5Alternatively, you could get a stand with a bed so that he can be comfortable while enjoying the fresh air, AND not do any damage. But silly me, my thoughts are always in the best interest of my pets, not my goods. Just make sure and not open that window too much. I can't even stomach the thought of having open windows with my cats (except the ones that open out to the atrium).
6hehe cute pics and a great idea!
7awww what a cute pic! My sister's cats do that too with the window, although they are indoor cats and both enjoy being at home, she got them cat beds that you can hang on top of a radiator, they absolutely love them so if you're fortunate enough to have a radiator under a window it might work...I don't know if they make them for dogs too, as I expect a dog and a cat might not have the same weight, especially depending on what kind of dog or cat it is?
They were in the same style as that one:
