While vegging on the couch over the weekend, I caught a rerun of The Real Housewives of New York City. Just joining one of the families was a new ($1,800) West Highland White Terrier puppy named Aston. With some skepticism (and sarcasm), the Countess LuAnn de Lesseps and fam discuss the reasoning behind the name and mention adding another pup named Martin before picking up the car. Surely, a second dog (and Aston Martin) are not beyond a Count's budget, but hey, who knows?! While the son earnestly agrees with the dad's name, and I've heard of many different reasons for naming a pet, I couldn't help but wonder if the name of this pooch was entirely the boy's choice. After all, I named my first dog Joey after a boy I had a crush on in preschool. Now I'd love to hear the name of your first pet in the comments below!

Untold
the name of my first dog was Java. we named her that because she had a black and brown tint like coffee.
1My first cat's name was Checkers. He had a black and white pattern across his face that looked like a checkerboard.
2Purebred black lab named Pepper. I picked it out. I was 4 at the time. hehe.
3The first pet I named was Liberty, my cat. At the time, I had read the name in a book and just really liked it. Later, when we got a second cat, I named him Justice.
My family kept teasing that we should get a third cat named Furball - Liberty, Justice, Furball.
4"Bourbon" was my first pets name when I was young. My father named him in college, you can see by his name what is on college kids minds.
The first pet I got to name when I was older was "Ashley" after Laura Ashley the designer, I loved her stuff.
5BoBo who was a French Poodle. His real name was Jean Pierre LeBrun. ha ha I'm not even sure how the dog got that name. I was little very.
6First pet... a fish named McFly.
7First "real" pet... family dog, doberman named Shane. Love him! He is now my own pup's boyfriend.
Buffi - my cat
Rex-Dog
Lady-Dog
Vicks-Dog
Cock Cock - mmy Rooster
Donald - my duck
Mr. Bob- Cow
Ohh, how I miss the country sometimes with the animals.
Can you tell I had a farm.
8Our first pet growing up was a cat named Oshkosh. We were sitting around all coming up with bad names, and my dad suggested Oshkosh as a joke (my baby bro was wearing the overalls).
We named our next cat Levi, their kittens Jordache and Bugle Boy, and our first two dogs Dockers and Wrangler. (We got off the jean names after that).
9Growing up in my home, our first pet was a bird, a cockatiel name Goya-- yes, after the food brand.
10Goldfish = Oscar
Turtle = Cecilio
Cat = Baxter
I didn't have any pets growing up but my boyfriend named his first kitten Little Foot (from Land Before Time) when he was six or seven, which I think is ADORABLE.
11My first pet was named Shadow - but I didn't name him, so that doesn't count. (I was in the womb when my parents got him) But the first pet that I named was a dog named Sonora - the meaning was twofold. It's the name of the desert where we're from, and it was the name of the main character from the movie "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken" which was my sister's and my favorite movie as kids.
12My first cat was Bosco and the two dogs were Nebo and Darby. They were around before I was born.
13First pet I named was a dog named Snoopy. I only knew two names for dogs at the time, apparently, the other being the name of my babysitter's dog, so I couldn't use that. I say apparently, as I was too young to remember.
14A guinea pig named Tootsie--I named her after a character in the kid's book "Superfudge" I was reading at the time.
15Max!
16My first pet as a child was a cocker spaniel named Apple.
17The first that I named myself was a turtle named Barry Levon, named after two characters on the TV show "The State"
woodsie. he was a beagle/hound mix.
18a poodle mix named Sadie. and when she died i composed a poem titled "sadie, sadie, pretty lady" i was 8.
19My first dog was Frisker, named after the dog in a book called "Frisker" - it was my favourite book. I was about 3 when she came to live with us. She was a Dachshund, Chihuahua and Manchester Terrier combination and was with us for 16 years.
When she was eight, she had a litter of puppies. One of them had a small white dot on her chest (all of my dogs have been predominantly black,) so she got called "Dot" and, since she was a cute little puppy, that quickly became "Dotty." Around that same time, my Dad learned his job would be moving him to Kansas, and the way he let me know I could keep one of the pups was to ask me if I wanted "to take Dororthy back to Kansas." That name stuck, and so Dorothy came to Kansas with us - she lived to be about 17, and was a Dachshund, Chihuahua, Manchester Terrier, Scottish Terrier and Poodle mix, and was tall enough that her mother, Frisker, could run underneath her without ducking!
I had a cat - who also lived for 16 years - named Acyl. She was all black, and got named after the name I had used for years for my black-cat familiar when playing Dungeons and Dragons. That, in turn, had come from my obsession in college (when I did most of my D&D playing) with Pink Floyd - Acyl was short for "Any Colour You Like," one of the songs off "Dark Side of the Moon," and when it comes to using paints and such, black is, essentially, all of the colours of the spectrum combined, so a black cat was really any colour you wanted her to be (or something like that - I was probably a little stoned at the time - ROFL!)
Sabaka, the first lab mix my husband and I ever had, was named with the Russian word for "dog" - I'd had a friend name a dog Sabaka when I spent a few months in Nome, Ak, and just through it was a BEAUTIFUL name. He only lived to be 12 - I just lost him about 2 years ago, and it still hurts like crazy. With all my earlier pets, I'd either moved out of the home before they passed on, or, in Acyl's case, my parents dog had passed away and they knew they couldn't adopt a puppy or kitty since they're getting on in years, so since Acyl wasn't quite sure what to make of Sabaka or Tasha (our other lab mix, who came pre-named by her previous family), she got to go live with my folk in peace and quiet for her last several years.
Tasha, as mentioned above, was named by her previous family, but after they divorced when she was about a year old, neither could take her with them, so we adopted her from our vet.
Piper, my 9 year old cat, was named after Piper on "Charmed"
and Xander, our 2 year old lab mix was named after Alex (Alexander) Lifeson, the guitarist for Rush.
20Mokey was my first dog at 3 and she was an Alaskan Malamute.
21I named her after my favorite character on Fraggle Rock!
My first pet was a gold fish named Goldie...very creative. The first pet I got on my own was a hamster in college that I named Spazz because she was.
22I named my first kitty Lily, and my first dog was named Kissy. I was a really sassy little girl,
23Our first dog was named Max -- he was the BEST dog. I still have a picture of him in my apartment (my dad had to have him put down 4 years ago). My brother and I named our goldfish Goldie and Hawn. I named my gerbil Peanuts Junior (PJ for short) after the classroom gerbil in my 3rd grade class! And then my brother had (in order) 2 guinea pigs named Gus and Molly, and a ferret named Snowflake. I guess we were a little animal crazy as kids...
24My first cat was named Mony....I was in love with Billy Idol! My first dog was named (a mini schnauser) was named Valentine...she was a V-Day gift. I called her Tiny and her registered name was Baronous Valentine Von Sushi-Stien!
25My first dog was named Trixie, evidently because even at the tender age of 3 I had a fondness for fast girls from the 1950's. My second dog was named Mocha, because I was the only 11-year-old coffee addict I knew and she had paws that color.
Now I am on a mission to create a highly literary and referential universe and have two cats, one named Calliope after the muse of poetry, and one named Marlowe, after both the playwright Christopher Marlowe and the Raymond Chandler detective Phillip Marlowe. (My husband likes to say its also a little bit of the character of the same name on The Wire, but that's not true.)
26My very first pet (I was about 4 when I got it) was a goldfish I named Kelly. The next one was a Border Collie my sisters and I named Flash. Following more recently within the past couple of years is a black kitten named Snoop, and a (gorgeous) tomcat named Big. I have been DYING to get a dog, and probably will once I settle into a home/career...I cannot wait to adopt a furbaby and pick out a name!
27Fluffy
28my first dog was named Taffy, she was a collie and i pulled and pulled on her fur all the time with a brush cause she always got messy:) i can still remember her rolling around on the ground and stretching out to help me reach everywhere!
29Pets I had as a kid:
Mouse: Smokey (because he was smoke colored)
Bird: Jaque (because the French pronounciation sounded cool)
Hamster: Judah (after the street in the Sunset Dist.)
Pet I illegally had in the college dorm:
Dwarf Hamster: Ned (roomate named him)
REAL pets I currently have:
30Cat: Ozzie (he came named - he's a rescue)
Dog: Jack (named after my Grandpa)
Dog: Gotcha ("G" litter name theme)
Dog: Emmit (named after his doggie mom, Emma)
My first cat's name was K.C. for Kitty Cat.
31Callie Cat
32My first dog was Penny because she was a copper color. I still miss her!
33I had a huge, black bear of a dog I named Pretty. She was so great, I still miss that dog.
34My first pet was a parakeet that I named Misty...I think because she was blue? I guess I based a lot of stuff on color and weather because my hamster was white and named Snowy. Then I had another parakeet name Pepper because it had lots of little black spots and a goldfish name Spot because it had, well, a spot.
Then there was my first puppy who my mom really wanted to name Mandy, but I didn't like it, so we were brainstorming names while driving home. We passed a restaurant named T.J. Rafters and decided on T.J. until we thought of a better name and of course she started coming to it so it stuck. The funny thing was our neighbor bought the same breed (a peek-a-poo) and named him Max, so we had T.J. Max for a while. People used to always ask what it stood for and since it didn't really stand for anything I always said Toe Jam and my mom said Theresa Jane.
My mom finally has a Shi Tzu named Mandy now
Now I name my pets after Marlon Brando characters as I have a tortoise named Terry (On the Waterfront) and a pup named, well, Brando. I keep telling the bf that we need a kitten named Marlon and an iguana named Stanley
35My first per was a cat and her name was Flash because she was so fast
36Cleopatra or Cleo for short. She/he (who knows) was an iguana that had been living wild in our backyard for awhile before my dad caught it. It was the meanest lizard ever
37If you want to get technical, we had a bunch of tortises, a goat, a chicken, and a dog when I was born. I remember Red Eye, Ivar, and Milley the tortises, Muff the beagle, Billy Goat, and Charlie Chicken. But the first pet that was mine and I named was a hamster named Tony. I really liked Frosted Flakes.
38"It was the meanest lizard ever",
39Odysseus- I am a pretty huge nerd.
40The name of my first pet was Stubbies he was a small white poodle mix. We only had him a short time because someone stole him.
41My bunny named Bun-Bun
42Oh man taxing my memory...my first pet that was mine alone to take care of and not a family pet was a hamster. I named him after my beloved school bus driver "Mr. Max". Then I introduced the human "Mr. Max" to the hamster "Mr. Max". My bus driver was impressed but certainly not cuter than his namesake.
My first major pet was a cat from our neighbors. They called her "Lady" I hated it and asked the cat what she wanted to be called. Hey I was 7.
The cat formerly known as "Lady" replied "RALPH". Every time she meowed she said "Ralph!" So I named her Ralph. Everybody thought it was stupid to name a female cat a name until Ralph opened her mouth and meowed "Ralph!" Then it made perfect sense.
Funny everybody in my family misses Ralph to this day - she was a great girl.
43Sunshine
44My first pet was a cat named Kitty-Kitty. I know, very original!
45Gilly, the frog. He wasn't so much a cuddly first pet, but I still got to name him.
46My first pet was a Rottweiler called Byron.
47My first dog my dad named him Saddam Hussein, jajaja funny I don't know why I was like 5yrs old
I had to many dogs:) Another one, Carola, King, Princess,Duque,Cocco(cat)
48My first cat (black & white) was named Oreo. Then we got another black & white cat and named him Hydrox.
49My first pet when I was younger was a Cocker Spaniel named Ashley,
50after my middle name.
But the first pet I actually got to name was a rat I called "Sarah",
after the character of the same name on the old show "Avonlea"...haha!
