Even though I'm among the lucky bunch whose pet has never encountered this stinky pal, I do remember my best friend's dog getting sprayed when we were kids. Yuck! Her mom ended up using the tomato juice method which made her bathroom (and dog) smell like a tomato-dipped skunk . . . and left an awful mess from every time he shook. As I like to prepare for the worst before it happens, when I stumbled upon a home remedy for desmellifying a pet, I had to pass it along. To see this recipe, read more.
Mix 4 cups of hydrogen peroxide with 1/3 cup baking soda and a splash of Dawn dishwashing detergent. Wet your pet and work the formula through his fur. Let the mixture soak on your pup for four or five minutes (in a supervised environment). Rinse thoroughly, dry, and discard the rest. If you need just a spot remedy, make a spray-bottle solution to keep on hand to cure problem areas.

Gosh, I hope I never get sprayed by a skunk!
1oh my! luckily i have not yet seen a skunk in my suburb
2That picture is just adorable!
3Awwwwww!
4Holy cow! 4 cups of H2O2 and only 1/3 cup baking soda (is that 5% base to acid)? I would think the H2O2 would burn a pets skin then the baking soda would just help their skin foam off easier. I am guessing here that the hope is that the acid of the H2O2 dissolve the enzymes and oils in the Skunk smell and the baking soda neutralizes the H2O2 and gathers the stink.
Hydrogen Peroxide is a weak acid, but its strong enough to eat skin skin off a wound. I would test it on my own skin first before applying to any animal as H2O2 comes in difficult concentrations from the home.
I guess I'm understanding why people use tomatoes/tomato sauce - it's a weaker acid and it doesn't need to be neutralized after being applied. Yeah you have to use more but its less likely to burn the skin.
5Tomato juice doesn't work, it just makes your bathtub look like the movie Psycho.
6Oh, and if you use conditioner the sting goes away. It feels more like it's drying your skin out than an actual burning feeling. I conditioned the dogs too, and no rashes or noticeable discomfort.
7Geez. Last comment, I promise. Don't spray this on your furniture. Not safe for fabrics or carpet.
8unfortunately, i HAVE had to use this remedy and it does work. as noted above by a fellow poster, rocco's hair did bleach out a little but the smell was gone.
9A groomer I used to work with used Massengill Powdered Douche. Cheap, and works wonders!
10I want a spotted skunk as a pet so bad!!!
11weird question and off topic, but does anyone have or know of anyone who has a skunk pet?
